Counterfeit goods currently account for a major share of global trade, and this scourge now affects almost all sectors of the economy. Many countries are therefore moving towards more effective co-operation to combat this threat.
The World Customs Organization (WCO) has consequently established a working group bringing together private sector partners and Customs administrations in order to enhance information exchange between Customs services.
This is the “WCO Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Strategic Group”, aimed at providing Customs officials with training on regulations relating to IPR compliance and how to differentiate between genuine and counterfeit goods.
To enhance this initiative, the WCO has developed a new e-learning module aimed at Member administrations and the Organization’s partner institutions. Its primary objective is to alert the entire Customs community to this phenomenon and make consumers more vigilant by highlighting the effects of counterfeiting on public health and safety. The Customs issues tied to the targeting and selectivity of the fake products have been concieved in co-operation with the TAXUD Task Force of the European Commission.
This new tool, which has been developed in partnership with the French Customs Administration, is available in an electronic format accessible via the WCO’s e-learning platform.
