. They agreed upon the need for enhancing cooperation in the area of IPR enforcement. Mr. Mikuriya explained the recent WCO activities in IPR where the WCO has been working on reviewing and aligning existing tools on IPR in order to help countries enforce border measures based on best practices from around the world.
He stressed the importance of partnership with other international organizations including WIPO, and in developing tools and providing technical assistance since legislation involves national legal systems and competence issues which could require wider examination of those legal systems beyond just the customs realm. Dr. Gurry, who formally took up the duties of Director General on October 1 following election in May, explained his new policy with an emphasis on IPR enforcement. He welcomed multilateral cooperation in this area among the international organizations. The two leaders agreed to explore possibilities for joint actions to enhance partnership between the two organizations.
