Launch of the WCO Career Development Programme for 2012/2013

Brussels, 14 September 2012

WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya welcomed officials attending the 2012/2013 WCO Career Development Programme on 14 September 2012, expressing the expectation that they would gain a great deal of knowledge, skills and international work experience during their time at the Secretariat, whilst expanding the Customs network.

The Programme is a fairly new initiative, having been launched in 2009 by the WCO, in cooperation with Japan Customs. It provides an opportunity for selected candidates to undertake work at the WCO Secretariat and has the following aims: to enable participants to obtain knowledge, skills and international work experience; to develop and enhance networks among WCO Members and the Secretariat; to support and assist the Secretariat in its mission and tasks; and to develop a pool of highly competent officials with expertise in Customs administrations.

Eight Customs officials from Angola, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Cote d’Ivoire, India, Jordan, Mauritius and Uruguay will be working at the WCO Secretariat for the next 10 months, and will be assigned different professional tasks. They are expected to contribute to the activities and work of the WCO Secretariat, WCO Members and the six regions of the WCO.

Since its inception the Programme has served to promote the involvement of WCO Members in the Organization's various activities, in particular where neither of the two official WCO languages is widely spoken.
