Combating the trade in counterfeit and pirated goods is a priority for the World Customs Organization (WCO).
People in Africa are increasingly being exposed to the deadly consequences of fake medicines and other counterfeit consumer products. Their health and safety is being put at great risk as this illegal trade continues to flourish. In fact, counterfeiting and piracy has had devastating economic and social effects and for this reason concerted international action is now necessary if we are to deal a damaging blow to this form of criminal activity.
As Africa has become a preferred target for the fake goods industry, the WCO has organised a seminar in Dakar (Senegal) from 8-10 November 2006 in conjunction with Interpol, the World Health Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the Senegalese Customs administration. Given the unique position of Customs as the first line of defence, this event, which is by invitation only, will enable all stakeholders to take stock of the latest trends at borders and consolidate international efforts to stamp out counterfeiting and piracy.
Sadly, 2006 may be remembered as a record breaking year for seizures, both in terms of number and size. It is therefore incumbent on us to rethink our policy in order to ensure that it is more in tune with what is actually happening on the ground. This meeting will provide the ideal opportunity for the WCO and its international partners to present the new initiatives that they intend to launch in the very near future. |
