Subtitle:
Preparing to tackle the challenges of the 21st century
Date:
27 to 28 March 2007
Location:
Brussels, Belgium
Venue:
WCO Headquarters

Introduction:
The challenges posed by globalisation, trade facilitation initiatives, and security concerns on the role of Customs in the 21st century necessitates a more professional approach to the management and operations of Customs administrations across the globe. This requires a much broader awareness of the impact of global change, the trends in international trade and transport, and the development of new skills, particularly by Customs managers.
Objectives:
To strengthen the role played by Customs authorities in administering international trade, securing national borders and protecting society, the WCO in partnership with the INCU and others wishes to consolidate its efforts to develop global professional standards for Customs and to launch an academic journal focused on relevant subjects that will serve as a valuable source of reference for Customs to meet the requirements of the new strategic environment.
Key Players:
World Customs Organization

The World Customs Organization (WCO) is the only intergovernmental organisation uniquely focused on Customs matters and is regarded as the voice of the international Customs community. Dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of its 170 Members across the globe, the WCO is particularly noted for its work in areas covering the development of global standards, the simplification and harmonisation of Customs procedures, the security of the trade supply chain, the facilitation of world trade, the combating of Customs offences, anti-counterfeiting and piracy initiatives, and sustainable global Customs capacity building programmes. The WCO also maintains the international Harmonized System goods nomenclature, and administers the technical aspects of the WTO Agreements on Customs Valuation and Rules of Origin.

The International Network of Customs Universities

The International Network of Customs Universities (INCU) was established to provide the World Customs Organization and other organisations with a single point of contact with universities and research institutes active in the field of customs research, education and training. The INCU is also designed to provide a global resource for governments and the private sector, and an educational source for students wishing to further their knowledge in the field of customs management and administration, and international trade and logistics management.
Target Audience:
This Conference is intended for specialists in Customs development, universities and research institutions with an interest in international trade and security issues, Customs HR practitioners, Customs and trade executives, consultants and representatives from international organisations.
