New Secretary General takes up the reins

At the WCO Council’s annual sessions in June 2008, the Members of the World Customs Organization, represented by Directors General of Customs, elected their new Secretary General, Mr. Kunio Mikuriya, whose five-year term at the helm of the WCO commences on 1 January 2009.

Kunio Mikuriya has pledged to make the WCO an effective Organization by promoting good governance, by enhancing Member participation in the decision-making process, and by increasing dialogue with partner organizations as well as with the private sector.

In taking up office he said, “The WCO plays a key role in the facilitation and security of trade, in building the capacities of Customs administrations, and in terms of international co-operation. It is essential that its role and expertise enjoy a higher profile on the international scene. While the 21st Century will throw down numerous challenges to the international Customs community, it will also offer a great many opportunities. We can meet these challenges and take advantage of these opportunities by working in unison, and by responding to them in a dynamic and efficient manner.”

The Members of the World Customs Organization and the staff of the Secretariat welcome the new Secretary General.
