WCO Members will have the opportunity to showcase their efforts and activities in this domain.

Celebration of ICD 2018 around the world

AUSTRALIA : The Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs, and the Acting Commissioner of the Australian Border Force attended Australia’s ICD 2018 celebration, during which they presented an award to the Green Lane Trial team, recognizing their drive and commitment to address the challenges of ever increasing volumes of international mail.

AUSTRIA : A number of Customs officers were presented with Certificates of Merit by the State Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Herbert Fuchs (front row, 2nd from l.), and the Austrian Customs Attaché, Brussels, Anton Zeilinger (back row, far r.). BANGLADESH : The Prime Minister, H.E. Sheikh Hasina, unveiled a commemorative postage stamp and a first day cover (FDC). Presided over by the Chairman of the the National Board of Revenue, a seminar was held in the presence of the Hon. Finance Minister and the Hon. Commerce Minister. Besides Customs officers, the Ministry of Commerce was also awarded a WCO Certificate of Merit by the Finance Minister as a very important stakeholder.

BELGIUM : ICD 2018 was a special edition for Belgium Customs: Brussels’ famous city landmark, the Manneken-Pis, received the official Belgium Customs uniform. Customs officers were also awarded Certificates of Merit during the function. In addition, demonstrations of the whole range of Customs activities were held to raise awareness on the crucial role played by Customs in international trade.

BERMUDA : ICD 2018 was celebrated through innovative events organized over a period of a week, culminating on 26 January, such as: An “open house” with a series of displays and demonstrations to raise awareness among the public of Customs’ role; the annual “C.A. Smith Run, Walk, Ride Fun Race,” named in honour of former Senior Customs Officer Colin Smith; and distribution by Customs officers going in the streets refreshments and small tokens to the public.

CUBA : The Head of the General Customs, Mr. Pedro Miguel Pérez Betancourt, took the opportunity, during the celebration of ICD 2018, to reward several Customs officers for their contribution to the theme "A secure business environment for economic development." Ms. Yamilka Felipe Bringas, Head of Commercial Customs Control and Centralized Customs Clearance, was one of the recipients.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC : At the occasion of the ICD 2018, Enrique Ramírez Paniagua, the DG of the General Directorate of Customs, awarded WCO Certificates of Merit to nine employees of the institution as well as to some public and private entities for their contributions to Dominican Customs.

INDIA : The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) celebrated ICD 2018 on 27 January with the Hon. Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley and the Hon. State Minister for Finance Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla. The Finance Secretary, Dr. Hasmukh Adhia, was also present along with the CBEC Chairman Vanaja N. Sarna, Members of the Board, and senior Customs officers. WCO Certificates of Merit were awarded to 20 officers from Customs, as well as from other departments and to representatives from the trade, for their commitment to the annual theme.

LEBANON : The Lebanese Customs administration celebrated ICD for the first time with a conference on 26 January 2018 entitled "A secure business environment for economic development," which was sponsored by the Ministry of Finance. The newly appointed Customs Director General Mr. Badri Daher delivered a speech on the occasion, and gave a presentation on the simplification of Customs procedures. An MOU on the ISO 9001:2015 implementation in the Customs administration was signed at the end of the ceremony.

MADAGASCAR : During the ICD 2018 celebration, sponsored by the Minister of Finance and Budget, some 20 Customs officials and representatives of the private and public sectors were rewarded for their outstanding work towards the annual theme “A secure business environment for economic development.” The event also provided the ideal opportunity to officially launch the “ASYCUDA World System.” The Director General of Customs, the Regional Coordinator of UNCTAD, and high-level local dignitaries from the public and private sector delivered speeches on the occasion.

NETHERLANDS : On ICD 2018, Certificates of Merit were awarded to 11 employees of Dutch Customs. A diploma was also presented to the Director General, Ms. Aly van Berckel, who has since left Customs for the Immigration and Naturalisation Service with effect from 1 February.

NIGERIA : An official ceremony took place in Abuja to celebrate ICD 2018, which was attended by many high-level dignitaries such as the Minister of Finance represented by the Director of Home Finance, Mrs Olabunmi Bola, as the guest of honour. In the picture, the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali, is seen delivering his opening remarks. WCO Certificates of Merit were awarded to 21 Customs officers, to departments of the Customs service, as well as to private organizations and government agencies.

SERBIA : During the ICD ceremony, Mr. Veselin Milosevic, the Acting Deputy Director General of the Customs Administration presented WCO Certificates of Merit to 18 Customs officers who had shown great dedication to the improvement of Customs, as well as to officers from the Belgrade Office of the German Organization for International Cooperation (GIZ) who had, through direct engagement, provided support to Serbian Customs. He extended his congratulations on the occasion of ICD, before revealing the 2018 theme “A secure business environment for economic development.”
