The International Customs Day (ICD) on 26 January 2020 will be dedicated to the contribution of Customs towards a sustainable future where social, economic, health and environmental needs are at the heart of our actions, with the slogan “Customs fostering Sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet”.
WCO Members will have the opportunity to showcase their efforts and activities in this domain.

BAHAMAS : The 31st Awards Ceremony, organized by Bahamas Customs in the framework of ICD, was held on 24 January 2020 at Government House.

BANGLADESH : In celebrating ICD 2020, Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR) organized, among other activities, a festive, colourful rally that was inaugurated by the Chairman of the NBR, with many officials and staff of Customs participating in the event.

BELGIUM : The celebration of ICD 2020 by Belgium Customs at the Brussels City Hall was presided over by the General Administrator of Belgium Customs and Excise, who gave Certificates of Merit to deserving Customs officers as well as Customs’ partners. The ceremony was followed by a parade led by the official band of Belgium’s Ministry of Finance, concluding with the unveiling of the Belgian Customs uniform worn by the iconic Manneken-Pis statue.

CAMEROON : The festivities to celebrate ICD 2020 in Cameroon were presided over by H.E. the Finance Minister. Besides the award of WCO Certificates of Merit, a military parade at Yaoundé’s air base 101 was also part of the programme.

CHILE : ICD 2020 was commemorated throughout Chile by Regional Customs Offices, with Customs officers sharing information at civic squares with citizens about their role in the protection of people and borders.

CHINA : In Beijing, on the occasion of the ICD 2020 celebration, the Vice Minister of China Customs addressed officials and representatives from 25 countries and regions based in China. He shared some of China Customs’ achievements in 2019 and put forward three international cooperation initiatives, in line with the annual theme on sustainability, covering Customs control mechanisms, the cross-border business environment and global governance for national gateway security.

CONGO (DEMOCRATIC REP. OF THE) : The Customs administration of the Democratic Republic of the Congo celebrated ICD 2020, with a specific focus on the “sustainability” theme.

DENMARK : ICD 2020 was celebrated throughout Denmark with a breakfast buffet for all 800 employees based at different border posts. Eleven Customs officials were awarded WCO Certificates of Merit by the Danish Customs Agency for their contribution to the “sustainability” theme, with a speech by the Director General at the Agency’s Head Office in Aarhus.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC : On the occasion of ICD 2020 in the Dominican Republic, the Director General of Customs awarded WCO Certificates of Merit to Customs officials and representatives of the public and private sectors in recognition of their contributions to the “sustainability” theme.

FRANCE : The ceremony to celebrate ICD 2020 was marked in France by the award of WCO Certificates of Merit to 18 Customs officers and to an operator who actively promoted "sustainability,” particularly through regulatory monitoring and the implementation of environmental standards and endangered species protection controls. The ceremony was presided over by the Head of the International Relations Delegation of French Customs.

INDIA : The ICD 2020 celebrations by India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) were presided over by the Hon. Union Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, which saw WCO Certificates of Merit being awarded to CBIC officers for their commitment to the theme in the presence of the Revenue Secretary, who is also Chairman of the CBIC, and distinguished senior officers.

JAMAICA : The Jamaica Customs Agency celebrated ICD 2020 with a week of events, commencing with church services across the island and the hosting of Stakeholders' Appreciation Days where refreshments and tokens were provided to customers at various Customs locations, as well as the production of two newspaper supplements, which provided Customs-related information to the public.

OF) : The Korea Customs Service (KCS) celebrated ICD 2020 at the Imperial Palace Seoul Hotel, with 150 honoured guests from diplomatic missions and other agencies, at which occasion the KCS Commissioner underlined the role and efforts of Korea Customs and the WCO to achieve co-prosperity, while encouraging participants to work together towards these goals.

LUXEMBURG : Luxembourg Customs celebrated ICD 2020 at the WCO Headquarters during which the Director General highlighted the different responsibilities entrusted to Customs with regards to environment protection and social cohesion. Demonstrations by sniffer dogs from Luxembourg’s Canine Unit, and presentations on the performances of their mobile scanning van and road inspection vehicles, against a musical background ensured by Luxembourg’s Customs orchestra were on the programme.

PORTUGAL : The ICD 2020 celebrations by the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority took place at the Ministry of Finance in Lisbon presided over by the Director General around the central theme “Customs Action Promoting Sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet,” which had been developed by the Inspector-General of the Food and Economic Security Authority and the Tax and Customs Authority’s Deputy Director-General of Excise Duties.

SAINT LUCIA : The Saint Lucia Customs and Excise Department, focusing on the “People” aspect of the annual WCO theme, invited retired and current staff to the ICD 2020 celebrations. The programme included remarks by the Comptroller, the Permanent Secretary of the Caribbean Customs Law Enforcement Council and the former Comptroller, as well as the awarding of WCO Certificates of Merit to two institutions of learning.

SEYCHELLES : For the ICD 2020 celebrations, the Seychelles Revenue Commission (SRC) organized a special midday mass on 29 January at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Victoria. The hardworking staff from the SRC’s Customs Division lively animated the event in the presence of a large crowd of people who were there to give their support to the SRC and towards its noble profession.

SLOVAKIA : Slovakia’s ICD 2020 celebrations took place at the famous Primate's Palace in Bratislava, during which WCO Certificates of Merit were presented by the Minister of Finance to six Customs officers who had achieved valuable results in the area of the annual theme “Customs fostering Sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet”. Medals of Honour were also awarded by the President of the Financial Administration to 42 employees for their exceptional service, and 22 Customs officers were promoted to a higher rank.

SPAIN : The ICD 2020 celebrations that took place at Spanish Customs’ Headquarters in Madrid were jointly chaired by the Director General of the Tax Agency and the Director General of Customs. On this occasion, 15 Customs officers were awarded WCO Certificates of Merit.

SRI LANKA : ICD 2020 was celebrated by Sri Lanka Customs under the “Customs fostering Sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet” theme, with the participation of Customs officials and representatives of other government and private agencies. The Hon. Prime Minister officially launched the 24/7 Customs Enquiry Point, where traders, SME entrepreneurs and the general public can obtain information on imports, exports, transhipments and passengers’ baggage as well as file complaints.

ZAMBIA : The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) organized weeklong events around the theme “Customs fostering Sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet" to celebrate ICD 2020. Activities included planting trees in a local courthouse in Lusaka, the disposal of expired or counterfeit goods, open days, and the awarding of WCO Certificates of Merit to Customs officials and stakeholders for their exceptional contributions to Customs’ services across the country.
