The International Customs Day (ICD) on 26 January 2021 will be dedicated to the united efforts of Customs to emerge from the coronavirus crisis and support people and businesses by strengthening the global supply chain, reinforcing collaboration, harnessing technology and putting “people” at the centre of the transformation process, with the slogan “Customs bolstering Recovery, Renewal and Resilience for a sustainable supply chain”.
WCO Members will have the opportunity to showcase their efforts and activities in this domain.

ANGOLA : On the occasion of ICD 2021 celebrations, the Angola Revenue Administration awarded WCO Certificates of Merit to Customs officials for their key contribution to the annual theme on sustainable supply chain.

AZERBAIJAN : Azerbaijan’s ICD 2021 celebrations took place virtually this year.

CHILE : The National Customs Service marked ICD 2021 with a big virtual celebration. Customs officers having excelled in their work during a difficult 2020 were rewarded. As part of its efforts to provide citizens with more and better information, Chile Customs presented its new interactive dashboards with updated data on foreign trade.

CHINA : The Vice Minister of China Customs gave a speech, highlighting that China Customs fully shares the vision reflected in the WCO theme for 2021. During the celebration, the Vice Minister awarded 20 Customs officers with the WCO Certificate of Merit for their exceptional service in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

CÔTE D’IVOIRE : During his address, General Da, Director General of Customs, recalled the measures adopted by the Customs Administration as part of the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also awarded distinctions to some Customs officials for their commitment during the health crisis.

DENMARK : Due to COVID-19 restrictions, ICD 2021 was celebrated online with 15 proud Customs officers sharing selfies with their Certificate of Merit, awarded for their contribution to the “Recovery, Renewal and Resilience” theme. A lucky few were presented with their Certificate in person by their managers, though most received it by mail as many Customs officers are currently working from home.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC : During a celebration held at Customs Headquarters, fifteen colleagues - together with three public sector institutions and two private companies - were awarded a Certificate of Merit for their contribution to the efficient development of Customs services and the facilitation of international trade during the pandemic.

ETHIOPIA : The Customs Commission celebrated ICD 2021 with Customs officials and representatives of public and private stakeholders, highlighting the electronic Customs service now in place and informing participants of the WCO’s role in building Customs capacity. Certificates of Merit were then awarded to stakeholders and Customs departments.

FRANCE : The ICD 2021 celebration was marked by the awarding of WCO Certificates of Merit to Customs officials for their commitment to “Recovery, Renewal and Resilience”’ during the COVID-19 health crisis, particularly through their remarkable work in the areas of regulatory monitoring and implementation of controls. GHANA : The Customs Administration held this year’s celebrations both face-to-face and virtually, with presentations by Customs and by its stakeholders on efforts made to maintain continuous trade flows along the international supply chain during the COVID-19 pandemic. The seminar culminated in the awarding of WCO Certificates.

GUATEMALA : Guatemala Customs (SAT) held ICD 2021 celebrations and some Customs officials were awarded WCO Certificates of Merit for their contribution to the “Recovery, Renewal, Resilience” theme against the difficult backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic.

INDONESIA : Indonesia Customs celebrated ICD 2021 online, with the Finance Minister, WCO Secretary General and other high-level Indonesian and regional representatives in attendance, together with Customs officials. This also provided an opportunity to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of the WCO Regional Customs Laboratory (RCL) and Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Indonesia, and award WCO Certificates of Merit to representatives from Customs as well as the public and private sectors.

ITALY : Some 20 Italian Customs officers were awarded WCO Certificates of Merit for their exceptional commitment to the “Recovery, Renewal and Resilience” theme, by helping Customs in its efforts to drive recovery in response to the pandemic by means of advanced digital technologies, heightened collaboration at borders and by building up greater supply chain resilience.

LITHUANIA :On the occasion of ICD 2021, a lesson on the WCO, its history and activities was given online to Lithuanian schoolchildren, led by the Lithuanian Customs Museum together with the beloved Dog and Handler Service. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fourteen Customs officials and three private sector representatives were awarded WCO Certificates of Merit remotely.

MADAGASCAR : Malagasy Customs celebrated ICD 2021 in Toamasina, the city which is home to Madagascar's largest port and which forms the country's economic lungs. Customs gave a presentation on its brand new information portal and its surveillance platform for leisure boats, the BSN/i-ONE project, developed in collaboration with Mauritius Customs. In addition, 20 officers were awarded a WCO Certificate of Merit for successfully performing their missions.

NEW ZEALAND : The photo shows Kirk McPherson receiving his certificate from Comptroller Christine Stevenson. Kirk, from Border Operations, received his certificate for working at the Ministry of Health to support the government’s Managed Isolation and Quarantine planning from a Customs perspective, while leading the Wellington team through the COVID-19 response and the beginning of the Maritime Border Order.

SEYCHELLES : The staff of the Seychelles Revenue Commission (SRC) marked ICD 2021 with a heartfelt donation to the Seychelles National Council for the Elderly. It consisted of a batch of basic care and assistance supplies for senior citizens within the nine different retirement homes managed by the Council.
