The Republic of Armenia becomes the 136th Contracting Party to the Harmonized System Convention

On 5 January 2009, the Republic of Armenia deposited with the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization its instrument of accession to the International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (Harmonized System).

Considering that more than 98% of international trade is classified in terms of the Harmonized System, the World Customs Organization is pleased to welcome the Republic of Armenia as the 136th Contracting Party to the Harmonized System Convention and looks forward to Armenia’s active participation with respect to Harmonized System matters.

Armenia has been a Member of the World Customs Organization since 30 June 1992. Armenia is a landlocked mountainous country in South Caucasus between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Located at the juncture of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, it borders Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Nakhchivan exclave of Azerbaijan to the south. Its principal export commodities are pig iron, unwrought copper, non‑ferrous metals, diamonds, mineral products, foodstuffs, energy. The country’s principal import commodities are natural gas, petroleum, tobacco products, foodstuffs and diamonds.

The Harmonized System Convention will enter into force in Armenia on 1 January 2011, unless Armenia decides to specify an earlier date.
