2nd WCO/UPU Joint Regional Training Workshop on Customs Clearance of Postal Items supported by the NORAD Fund
July 2009

The second workshop within the WCO-UPU Joint Training Project will be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 27 to 31 July 2009. It will gather two officials from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Tanzania (United Rep.) and Uganda, one from Customs Administration and the other from the Post.

The sponsorship of the NORAD Fund from Norway will enable to support the Customs officials to attend the workshop.

Through the workshop, the participants will develop methods to ensure the efficient acceptance, induction, processing and release of postal items by Customs. Important issues related to national experiences on Postal traffic will be raised by the participants. While exchanging on the problems caused by this specific traffic, they will be guided to find possible joint solutions within their own countries.

The overall objective is to improve the quality of service provided, which is at the heart of both Customs and Postal strategies. The training and capacity building related measures will raise the profile of Customs and facilitate the speedy and secure Customs clearance of postal items, leading to improved quality of partnership and service.

The first pilot of the WCO/UPU Joint Training was held in Bangkok last September 2008 and proved to be very successful. The support of Norway, through the NORAD Fund, now enables to extend this valuable capacity building experience to 12 English-speaking African countries.
