XXIV Meeting of CPLP Customs Directors General in Porto, Portugal

The 24th Meeting of CPLP Customs Directors General (Portuguese-speaking countries) took place in Porto (Portugal)from 28 September to 3 October 2009. Delegations from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste attended the meeting.
At the meeting, the WCO Secretary General, Kunio Mikuriya, briefed delegates on the Organizations priorities, the way ahead, and gave a speech on "Customs in the 21st Century".
Mr. Mikuriya stated, “I am grateful to Director General De Sousa of Portuguese Customs for inviting me to attend this annual meeting for the first time”. He then said, “ As the WCO is making every effort to increase the participation of WCO Members in the work of the Organization I am hoping to encourage more participation from Portuguese-speaking countries with the gradual introduction of Portuguese in the WCO’s activities”. The Secretary General added, " The accession of Sao Tome and Principe to the Convention establishing a Customs Co-operation Council on 23 September 2009 is one example of the appreciation for the greater benefit of WCO Membership”. In conclusion he said, “ The WCO will continue to enhance cooperation with the CPLP which has already provided Portuguese versions of the Harmonized System and the General Annex to the Revised Kyoto Convention to support its members in Customs matters”.
The meeting was held in the former Customs Office in Porto that has been transformed into a convention centre that houses the Customs Museum.
