Diagnostic mission to Nicaragua

April 2010

On request of Nicaragua Customs who have been heavily involved in the modernization and development progress of their administration, the WCO conducted a diagnostic mission as part of the WCO Columbus Programme Phase I to the country from 26 April to 07 May 2010.

The team carrying out the diagnostic was led by Ms. Gioconda Jofre from Chile Customs Service, and also participating was Mr. Selvin Antonio Lemus from the Capacity Building Directorate of the WCO.

The mission included visits to El Guasaule border port and Corinto Port to meet officers and see front line Customs operations. Additionally, various meetings took place with the Customs Directors and staff, private sector and other border ministries.

Mr. Eddy Medrano, Director General of Nicaragua Customs, welcomed the WCO diagnostic executive draft report, which was delivered at the end of the mission, as a valuable contribution for further national thoughts on the capacity building process in the country’s Customs administration. He manifested Nicaragua’s intention to continue with the implementation of the SAFE Framework of Standards and the modernization process of his Custom’s administration.
