Integrity Self-Assessment Workshop in Mauritius
Port Louis, 06 – 10 September 2010
From 6 to 10 September 2010, the World Customs Organization (WCO) Secretariat conducted an Integrity Self-Assessment Workshop for the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) in Port Louis which was funded by Eurocustoms. This exercise was preceded by a meeting with MRA stakeholders which provided insight into and background to the discussions relating, inter alia, to partnership with the private sector.
The Workshop was attended by staff from different MRA Divisions and resulted in the development of a draft Integrity Action Plan. The draft Plan is built around the 10 elements of the Revised Arusha Declaration and consequently covers all aspects of the MRA’s work from an integrity perspective.
There was an outstanding level of participation in the Workshop, with officers from Tax and Customs coming together to examine the integrity situation within their Administration and to deliver a product over which they will have sole ownership. The final Integrity Action Plan will be presented to the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, who showed great interest in the WCO’s integrity work. While in Mauritius, the WCO mission also met with the Director General of the Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC).
The implementation of the Integrity Action Plan will be monitored by the Internal Affairs Division, which was responsible for organizing the Workshop, and six-monthly progress reports will be sent to the WCO to ensure continuity of the implementation process.
