WCO at the World Economic Forum

Davos, 26-30 January 2011

Report

At the invitation of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the WCO Secretary General, Kunio Mikuriya, participated in its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland from 26 to 30 January 2011 to share Customs’ views on topical issues with global leaders.

Guided by the overall theme “Shared Norms for the New Reality”, participants in Davos tried to understand the post-crisis situation, recognizing that the key to navigating the new reality will be the shared norms that transcend differences and enable inclusive growth.

“The WCO joins the global community in understanding and managing the risks and opportunities of our changing world through sharing knowledge,” commented Secretary General Mikuriya, “which will contribute to creating and enhancing the network of risk response.”

Mr. Mikuriya briefed delegates on the WCO’s work on preparedness, response and recovery for a wide range of risk areas including air transport security and natural disasters. Many political and economic leaders also listened to him speaking about Customs’ contribution to economic development through trade facilitation as well as border management in protecting consumers.

The Annual WEF Meeting provides leaders from government, industry, academia, civil society and the media with a platform to shape the global agenda and expedite the finding of solutions at the start of each year.
