A global enforcement operation targeting drug smuggling, organized by the World Customs Organization (WCO) in close co-operation with Japan Customs and financed by the Customs Co-operation Fund/Japan (CCF), resulted in the seizure by Customs officers of 2.8 metric tons of narcotics with a market value of approximately 70 million euro and in the arrest of 100 suspected traffickers.

The WCO attended the International Centre for Tax Development’s annual meeting in Lomé, Togo from 10-12 December. Director General of Togolese Customs, Mr. Kodjo Adedze, delivered the keynote speech and warmly welcomed participants from a broad range of organizations dealing with tax and development issues including NORAD, the OECD, UNDP and representatives of Customs administrations from Rwanda, Cameroon and Tanzania amongst others.

The WCO announces the official launch of its national Customs Enforcement Network (nCEN) application in the East and Southern Africa region. Following the pilot projects in Mauritius and Kenya, Namibia became the first country to implement the complete nCEN software package, including its Icomm feature.

Some 30 countries from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean joined forces from 26 October to 3 November 2013 during an international operation targeting the trafficking in cocaine by air, which led to 91 arrests and the seizure of over 1.7 tonnes of narcotics, including 181 kg of cocaine, 1,500 kg of cannabis and 40 kg of methamphetamine.
