The Customs Administration of Montenegro announces major drug seizure

13 June 2014

The Customs Administration of Montenegro seized a record high quantity of 250 kg of cocaine on 4 June 2014 in the port of Bar. The contraband came from South America with a final destination in Southern Europe, and was located in a container with bananas.

Following swift information exchange through the UNODC-WCO Container Control Programme (CCP) between the various port control units and a risk analysis system, the container was selected, scanned and then inspected by Customs officers from the Anti-smuggling Department.

Using specialized tools for detection of narcotics, the Customs officers, who had been recently trained under this programme, discovered 223 packages of cocaine concealed in a special compartment in the floor of the container.

The cocaine seizure had an estimated street value exceeding 12.5 million Euro.

The Customs administration has notified the Police administration, which is conducting further investigations in consultation with the prosecutor’s office.
