The Fifth Meeting of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact Committee took place as a virtual meeting on 28 August 2020. Members of the Global Compact, including the WCO Secretary General, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, were asked to exchange views on how they had delivered their priorities and continued to support their members throughout the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the activities of the Regional Vice-Chair of the Americas and Caribbean Region, Mr. Werner Ovalle, Director General of Guatemala Customs and Customs Intendant of the Superintendency of Tax Administration of Guatemala, held a virtual meeting on 20 August 2020 with Mr. Ricardo Treviño Chapa, Deputy Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO). Directors General and representatives of the region’s Members such as Chile, Colombia, Honduras, Panama, Peru, the United States and Uruguay also participated in the meeting.

The WCO Asia/Pacific Security Project has adapted its training approach to successfully deliver four national Passenger Controls training courses to WCO Member Customs administrations in the Asia/Pacific region. The Government of Japan provided financial support for the training, which was originally scheduled to be delivered in the first quarter of 2020.

At the invitation of the Director General of Myanmar Customs Department, Mr. Kyaw Htin, WCO Secretary General, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, participated in the 9th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – World Customs Organization (WCO) Consultation held virtually on 19 August 2020. This Consultation, which is held annually in the margins of the meeting of the ASEAN Directors-General of Customs, was chaired by Myanmar Customs Department, the Chair of ASEAN Directors-General of Customs meeting this year.

On 17 August 2020, at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Ghana, WCO Secretary General Dr Kunio Mikuriya virtually joined, alongside several African dignitaries, the official commissioning and handing over of the office premises for the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by the Government of Ghana to the African Union Commission (AUC) in Accra, Ghana.

At the invitation of the American Association of Exporter and Importers (AAEI), Mr. Ricardo Treviño, Deputy Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), has participated in this year’s AAEI Annual Conference which is taking place online from 11 August to 3 September 2020, with over 400 participants attending. This Conference aims to provide a forum for policy-makers to speak directly to international trade professionals about the benefits and shortcomings of the multilateral trading system.
