The Meeting launched the United Nations (UN) Roadmap for Accelerated Implementation of the Vienna Programme of Action.

On 16 September this year, the World Customs Organization (WCO) joins the international community to celebrate 35 years of work for the protection of the ozone layer. This layer of gas is the Earth’s shield, protecting it from the more harmful portion of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The work to protect the ozone layer is therefore fundamental to the protection of human health and the ecosystem. This work is particularly relevant to the WCO this year, as it rallies the global Customs community around the theme of “Customs fostering Sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet”.

On 3 September 2020, the WCO Secretary General, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, gave a special lecture to WCO scholars at the Customs Training Institute in Kashiwa, Japan. Nineteen scholars from the Japan-WCO Scholarship Programme, who are following the Master’s Degree Programme in Public Finance at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) or in Strategic Management and Intellectual Property Rights at the Aoyama Gakuin University (AGU), attended the lecture.

On 1 September 2020, the Eswatini Revenue Authority (SRA) held an inauguration ceremony to announce the official launch of a national electronic tariff platform. At the invitation of the SRA Commissioner General Dumisani E. Masilela, the event was virtually attended by WCO Secretary General Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, SACU Executive Secretary Paulina M. Elago and senior policy makers and managers from the SACU Member States. The ceremony was held in Mbabane, Eswatini where the Minister of Trade Mancoba Khumalo, the Minister of Finance Neal Reckingburg, Co-Chairs and Members of the National Trade Facilitation Committee, representatives of the European Union Delegation in Eswatini and a wide audience of Customs officers and private sector stakeholders were present.

At the invitation of the President of the Lebanese Higher Council of Customs, Mr. Assaad Tfaily, WCO Secretary General Dr. Kunio Mikuriya had a conference call on 31 August to discuss the reform and modernization of Lebanon Customs. This request followed the tragic explosion at the Beirut port on 4 August. Both WCO and Lebanon Customs agreed on the way forward for tackling this national priority.
