The WCO Data Innovation Hub (DIH) is the platform where Customs, academia, and the private sector converge. It enables Customs to remain at the cutting edge of data innovations and artificial intelligence (AI). With two informal meetings facilitated by the WCO Secretariat each year, it presents opportunities to explore this dynamic and ever-evolving world and represents an additional effort to foster future readiness for Member administrations.
The 2nd meeting of the WCO DIH took place on 18 October 2023 and featured a series of eight insightful presentations, with participation from companies and organizations that possess a high level of expertise in this domain. In his opening remarks, Dr. Taeil KANG, Director of Capacity Building, welcomed and encouraged participants to actively participate in this informal meeting and share views on data innovations and AI.
The morning session included presentations by Quantexa, Traxens, Deloitte, and Altana AI. These companies showcased their expertise in connecting the dots for smarter, safer, and frictionless borders, leveraging data to strengthen the power of Customs, transforming the classification process with AI, and presenting federated AI platforms for global Customs, respectively.
The afternoon session was equally engaging, with presentations by Customaite, GEO212, the Institute of Export and International Trade of the UK, and AdviceGEO. These sessions delved into the use of AI to create better Customs declarations, geospatial analysis to support Customs units, a Kenya/UK use case for a digital trade corridor, and leveraging location information through Data Spaces' initiatives for Customs.
The meeting provided valuable insights into how data innovation can enhance Customs operations, streamline processes, and contribute to more efficient, secure, and transparent cross-border trade. With the continuous evolution of data analytics, these innovations are poised to shape the future of Customs and international trade.
