As part of its Capacity Building mission, the WCO organized a Leadership and Management Development (LMD) Workshop from 9 to 20 October 2023 for 16 senior managers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Abuja, Nigeria. The Workshop took place as part of the multi-year strategic partnership with the NCS under the WCO Accelerate Trade Facilitation Programme as funded by the United Kingdom’s His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The overall objective of the two-week interactive workshop was to improve senior management’s capacity to lead and drive reforms within the NCS using the new leadership and management skills. Senior managers and managers from various departments and units of the NCS participated in the workshop. A wide range of topics on personal and organizational development was covered, such as Leadership, Integrity, Inclusiveness, Negotiations, People Management, Communication and Change Management. The workshop highlighted the importance of Self-Awareness as the basis to drive change within their personal and work life.
Throughout the workshop, many of the current and future challenges of the NCS were discussed. The workshop created an opportunity to openly discuss and share thoughts on how to move forward with the various initiatives within the NCS.
Furthermore, the workshop provided participants with an opportunity to assess their managerial skills and approach in their work environment, with areas like Self-Awareness, Communication, People Management and Change Management singled out by them during the Feedback Session as important.
The Comptroller-General, Mr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, himself a 2016 alumnus of the LMD Programme and a participant in the LMD Workshop organised earlier this year for the NCS Top Executive team, shared his experiences, emphasizing the importance of the Leadership and Management Development Programme for the NCS and underlining the Programme’s potential to change the lives of the participants for good.
