As part of their ongoing efforts under the WCO Anti-Corruption & Integrity Promotion (A-CIP) Programme, a five-day workshop on risk management was conducted from October 12 to 16, 2023, in Tegucigalpa, with the participation of a team of 20 officials from risk management, intelligence, post clearance and authorized economic operator programme. This activity was tailored to address the specific needs identified by the Honduras Customs Administration.
Experts from the Federal Agency of Public Revenue (AFIP) and the A-CIP Programme facilitated the event at Honduras Customs Headquarters. The approach placed emphasis on combining open-source information, intelligence, and internal data from the Customs system to assess low- and high-risk shipments and commodities. This dynamic combination of resources ensured that Customs officials were better prepared to tackle current and emerging risk challenges.
Over the course of the workshop, the participants developed several key tools to bolster risk management and enhance their fight against corruption. These tools include an operational risk matrix, categorizing risks based on Customs offences, vulnerabilities of specific customs offices, transit routes for sensitive goods, and efficiency and effectiveness of existing risk profiles. By harnessing the knowledge gained during the workshop, Customs officials are better equipped to adapt and respond effectively to the ever-evolving Customs landscape while maintaining a vigilant stance on corruption.
The WCO A-CIP Programme is currently supporting more than 20 countries across five WCO regions, making a significant impact on the Customs community worldwide. It receives funding from Norad and Canada and focuses on anti-corruption and integrity promotion in Customs administrations.
