The Tanzanian Revenue Authority (TRA) and WCO experts met from 19-28 August 2024 with various stakeholder groups across the country to discuss the next steps in working together to fight corruption and promote integrity with the support of the WCO Anti-Corruption and Integrity Promotion (A-CIP) Programme, with funding from Norway. The initiative contributed to Tanzania’s specific priority under the Programme: “Mutual trust and cooperation between the private sector and customs increased”. This is well aligned with the WCO Revised Arusha Declaration key factor, Relationship with Private Sector.
During a series of meetings in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Arusha and Mwanza, stakeholders were informed of the measures taken by TRA to solve problems that had been brought during previous meetings held in November 2023. One of the most impactful measures was the improvement communication between the parties to resolve doubts and clarify concepts, which ultimately had a very positive impact on the speedier processing of customs procedures. New challenges were also discussed with the aim towards finding mutual solutions.
Engagement with stakeholders, including periodic meetings like these, foster trust between the parties and allow for more open communication, which in turn helps strengthen integrity in Customs. TRA is committed to continue working along these lines, which is already yielding positive results for Tanzania under the WCO A-CIP Programme’s evaluation framework.
The WCO A-CIP Programme provides technical assistance and capacity building support to WCO Member administrations implementing integrity-related initiatives in line with the WCO Revised Arusha Declaration.
