Operation DEMETER V, which was conducted from 1 to 30 September 2019, saw Customs administrations’ efforts turned to monitoring and controlling cross-border movements of environmentally sensitive commodities, and ensuring compliance with trade-related provisions stipulated by Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), such as the Basel Convention and the Montreal Protocol.

On 29th November, the WCO and Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) signed an addendum to the initial Grant Agreement to expand funds for the WCO Anti-Corruption and Integrity Promotion (A-CIP) Programme for Customs, bringing Norway’s total contribution from EUR 5m to nearly EUR 8m.

A total of 55 40-foot containers stuffed with logs of wood, declared as wooden scantlings, sawn wood and/or commercial timber, were seized at the port of Callao, Peru in a coordinated action by the Port Control Unit established in the framework of the UNODC-WCO Container Control Programme and the Peruvian Customs and Tax administration (SUNAT) in late summer/early autumn.
