Report
The Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) Board of Executive Directors was briefed on 28 October 2009 by WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya whilst on a visit to Washington DC. Mr. Mikuriya outlined the current and future strategy of the WCO with an emphasis on Customs in the 21st Century, particularly Customs’ role in trade facilitation and economic recovery, as well as the WCO “Globally Networked Customs” concept.
This session was a follow-up to the recent IDB funding decision to support the WCO Regional Office for Capacity Building (ROCB) in Buenos Aires and Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) development.
The IDB responded very positively to the Secretary General’s presentation and expressed a strong desire for even closer and more extensive cooperation with the WCO in future.
The visit included a meeting between Mr. Mikuriya and IDB President, Luis Alberto Moreno, on the important role of Customs in supporting regional integration in Latin America and future areas of cooperation between the WCO and the IDB. The WCO Secretary General stated, "
Enhanced cooperation with multilateral development banks is one of my key priorities to support Customs reform based on WCO standards and best practices. I welcome the further strengthened willingness of the IDB to work with the WCO based on top-level dialogue as this will result in mutual benefit for both organizations".
