At the invitation of Mr. Marcio Verdi, Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT), the WCO Deputy Secretary General Sergio Mujica attended CIAT’s 48th General Assembly from 5 to7 May 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The central theme of the meeting was: "The Use of Information and Communication Technologies in the Tax Administration”.
239 delegates from 32 CIAT Member and associated countries, 17 invited countries, and 29 international organizations and institutions related to CIAT participated in the General Assembly.
The main topics discussed at the meeting included: the use of electronic documents in tax administrations, solutions for SMEs, innovations in the use of electronic systems, and the future role of technology in tax administrations. Deputy Secretary General Mujica facilitated a panel discussion on “Innovative implementations for simplifying processes”, with the participation of the Commissioners General from Uruguay, Guatemala and Peru. Simplification of Customs procedures was widely recognized as a key component of economic competitiveness and trade facilitation.
During his mission to Brazil, the Deputy Secretary General also met with Mr. Ernani Checcucci Filho, Director General of Brazilian Customs. The main topics discussed were the various initiatives the Brazilian Administration is currently implementing to continue its modernization process, as well as its strong commitment to further support and develop capacity building initiatives.
