WCO Leadership and Management Development (LMD) Workshop in Abuja (Gwagwalada), Nigeria

09 julio 2018

Following the success of the Top Executive Retreat and Leadership and Management Development workshop in 2016, the Nigerian Customs Services (NCS) requested its second LMD in two years bringing the total to 49 senior managers who have participated in the WCO’s leadership capacity development program.  A total of nineteen senior personnel from the rank of comptroller (9) and deputy comptroller (10) participated in the workshop held at the NCS Staff and Command College in Gwagwalada, Abuja from the 11th to the 22nd June 2018.

However, “this number is still not enough considering the size of NCS and span of control. More managers need to be exposed to the LMD programme to ensure meaningful impact across the organization” noted Mr. Anyawu – the Deputy Comptroller of NCS.  To this end, the WCO is exploring the possibility of supporting the NCS in the creation of a pool of facilitators that will deliver LMD workshops to middle managers.

During the workshop, participants shared their appreciation of the impact the workshop had on both their personal and professional lives and the steps they will be taking to improve their leadership and management in their respective areas of work. Out of these personal take-aways or “baskets of plantain” as they referred to them, the following themes arose:

“self-awareness; re-birth; listening; broadened leadership horizon; transformation; courageousness; recognizing potential in others; game changer”.
