The World Customs Organization (WCO) delivered a one-day training event on 7 June 2019 for Customs Enforcement Officers of Lao PDR Customs Department on ‘techniques of utilizing modern inspection equipment’.
Hands-on training were provided on the use of Raman Spectrometers, Backscatter X-Ray and XRF Metal Analyzer during the sessions. Training in the use of Global Shield Field Test Kits, designed to identify thirteen precursor chemicals for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) was also delivered. All of the equipment had been donated by the Asia/Pacific Security Project with funding from the Government of Japan.
The event was held at the Institute of Economics and Finance, Dongkhamsang, Lao. About forty Customs officials with responsibility for enforcement and intelligence from all parts of the country attended the sessions. The training sessions related to the use of technical devices as well as safety and security of the personnel while using the devices.
The participants showed deep interest in the devices and are eager to commence using them at key border locations soon after the training. It was felt that the devices will enhance their capability to identify, small arms and light weapons, precious metals, precursor chemicals that may be used to manufacture IEDs and psychotropic drugs.
