16 septiembre 2019

On 12 and 13 September 2019, WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya visited Washington D.C. and had a series of meetings with several U.S. Government agencies, highlighting the work of the WCO and areas of common interest.

Dr. Mikuriya took the opportunity to engage with the Interagency Committee on Customs Co-operation Council Matters, hosted by United States Customs and Border Protection (U.S. CBP), with almost twenty government agencies in attendance. He explained the nine WCO priorities that had been developed in close consultation with the Organization’s Members. He went on to praise the Committee as a good example of Coordinated Border Management, the first priority identified by the WCO Council. He appreciated the feedback from and efforts by the Committee in shaping the WCO’s future agenda and thanked it for the ceaseless commitment to a wide variety of Customs topics.

The Secretary General also had separate meetings with the Department of State, the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the Department of the Treasury, and the White House National Security Council and National Economic Council. They all expressed their appreciation for the work undertaken by the WCO. In addition, he met with Mr. Mark Morgan, Acting Commissioner of CBP, who expressed his strong support for the Organization on behalf of the U.S. Government.

Finally, Dr. Mikuriya also interacted with the U.S. Council for International Business led by Mr. Peter Robinson, its President and CEO. The Secretary General reconfirmed the Organization’s intention to continue working in close partnership with private sector stakeholders.

The participants in the various discussions thanked the Secretary General for this opportunity to engage in person and praised the WCO leadership for the way it involves the Private Sector Consultative Group in its work.
