Enhancing national border agency cooperation with the Peruvian Border Agencies

17 junio 2021

On 9 June 2021 the WCO held a virtual Dialogue on Coordinated Border Management with the Customs Administration of Peru (SUNAT), the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, and the SeCompetitivo1 Programme. This event was organized within the framework of the SECO-WCO Global Trade Facilitation Programme (GTFP) and under the auspices of the WCO Mercator Programme.

The main objective of this mission was to support the SUNAT on strengthening its capacities on Coordinated Border Management (CBM), to analyze potential synergies between the programmes, and to identify the next steps for the WCO’s tailor-made technical assistance to Peru on that specific topic.

For that purpose the WCO experts raised awareness on the importance of CBM and the available WCO instruments and tools. In addition, the WCO team reviewed recent developments in Peru with regards to CBM, which allowed them to get acquainted with the status of CBM in the country. Additionally, the experts discussed with the participants various issues which have impact on the work of the Customs Administration with other trade stakeholders. Communication, cooperation, coordination and collaboration among cross border regulatory agencies were listed as important elements for any nation to address problems related to CBM. Participation of private sector was acknowledged as complement to strengthen CBM in Peru during the discussion.

Based on this Dialogue, materials will be tailored to organize workshops for the SUNAT with other border agencies and the private sector.
