03 octobre 2017

At the invitation of the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT), the WCO Director of Compliance and Facilitation, Ana Hinojosa, delivered a presentation on Customs and its role in the fight against terrorism to representatives attending the 17th World Summit on Counter-Terrorism, which was held in Israel, in September 2017.

More than 1,200 top decision makers, security industry leaders and prominent scholars, as well as defence, intelligence and police officials from over 60 countries took part in this year’s event, held under the theme “The Terrorism Maze,” to analyse and discuss the factors, influences and trends that make up the web of terrorism and counter-terrorism.

In her presentation, Ms. Hinojosa introduced the activities of the WCO and recent progress being made in the following areas: the collection of data (including on passengers) and risk analysis; cooperation between Customs authorities and other borders agencies; and the fight against illicit trade, particularly dual use materials, and work related to small arms and light weapons as well as the trade in chemicals that could be diverted for use in the illegal manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

During her visit to Israel, Ms. Hinojosa also met with Mr. Moshe Asher, the Director General of the Israel Tax Authority, and with Mr. Avraham Ben Ardete, the Head of the Customs Directorate. In addition, she attended the national Customs Directorate’s Senior Management Forum, where she delivered a presentation on the latest priorities in global trade from a WCO perspective, touching on topics such as e-commerce, global security, the SAFE Framework of Standards review cycle and the deployment of AEO programmes, as well as the implementation of the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement.
