As part of its Risk Management and Intelligence Programme, the World Customs Organization (WCO) conducted a comprehensive risk management diagnostic support mission in Uzbekistan from 20 to 24 February 2023.
New challenges at national borders have led many Customs administrations to establish a more structured and systematic method of applying risk management, faced with the dual burden of ensuring trade facilitation and performing effective Customs controls.
The aim of this mission was to produce a comprehensive report on the implementation status of the country’s risk management process, given that the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan has shown great interest in strengthening its professional capacities and standards in this domain.
During his welcome address at the start of the mission, Mr. Ilkhom Mukhtarov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Customs Committee, thanked the WCO Secretariat for organizing this diagnostic mission. He acknowledged its importance for his country at a time when it was looking towards full digitalization and modernization of information technology systems and risk management activities, with a view to excluding the human factor from the decision-making process when determining targeting and selection methods for controls of cargo and passengers on an ongoing basis.
