Georgia becomes the 137th Contracting Party to the Harmonized System Convention
On 27 March 2009, Georgia deposited with the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization its instrument of accession to the International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (Harmonized System).
Considering that more than 98% of international merchandise trade is classified in terms of the Harmonized System, the World Customs Organization is pleased to welcome Georgia as the 137th Contracting Party to the Harmonized System Convention and looks forward to Georgia’s active participation with respect to Harmonized System matters.
Georgia has been a Member of the World Customs Organization since 29 October 1993. Georgia is a country in south-western Asia, bordering the Black Sea, between Turkey and Russia. Its principal export commodities are scrap metal, wine, mineral water, ores, vehicles, fruits and nuts. The country’s principal import commodities are fuels, vehicles, machinery and parts, grain and other foods, pharmaceuticals.
The Harmonized System Convention will enter into force in Georgia on 1 January 2011, unless Georgia decides to specify an earlier date.
