Switzerland pledges sustainable support for the WCO Fellowship Programme

Brussels, 25 March 2009

On Wednesday 25 March 2009, Mr. Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the WCO, and Mr. Andrea Canonica, Head of the International Affairs Service within the Swiss Federal Customs Administration, signed an agreement renewing Swiss Customs’ support for the WCO French-speaking Fellowship Programme.

Swiss Customs reiterated its wish to sponsor between one and three Fellows every year, thus offering these young Customs executives a genuine opportunity to hone their management skills and increase their ability to implement WCO standards.

For several years now, and by hosting a study trip to Berne, Switzerland has been enhancing the operational skills learned by the Fellows chosen for the Programme. It is thanks to active support from Switzerland and the other donors that, earlier in their careers, several of today’s Directors General reaped the benefits of this Programme and the best practices shared within it.

Switzerland’s sustainable support for this Programme is further proof of the Customs family’s shared commitment to organizational development initiatives.
