Successful conclusion of first WCO Fellowship Programme for Spanish speakers

Madrid, 17 December 2010

Report

Secretary General Mikuriya celebrated the successful conclusion of the 53rd WCO Fellowship Programme, the first for Spanish speakers in the history of the Organization, at the closing ceremony in Madrid on 17 December 2010 together with Director General Nicholas Bonilla of Spanish Customs.

The Fellowship Programme has 25 years of history in developing future Customs managers for WCO Members and is considered one of the WCO’s most successful initiatives to date.

Ten participants followed a four-week management course at the WCO in Brussels and a two-week practical course at Spanish Customs in Madrid.

The Secretary General expressed his thanks to three private sector associations, namely, ASAPRA, BASC and CLADEC for their financial support, which clearly symbolized the Customs-Business Partnership in the area of capacity building. He also stressed the importance of establishing a human network between different Customs administrations through the Programme which was an excellent platform for the WCO’s Globally Networked Customs concept.
