Opening of the new Regional Office for Capacity Building in Abu Dhabi

20-21 January 2010

Report

At the invitation of Undersecretary Hamad Al-Hurr Al-Suwaidi of the Department of Finance in Abu Dhabi, Secretary General of the WCO, Kunio Mikuriya, visited Abu Dhabi from 20 to 21 January for the official inauguration ceremony of the WCO Regional Office for Capacity Building (ROCB) for the North of Africa, Near and Middle East (MENA) region. He was accompanied by the Director General of Moroccan Customs, Abdellatif Zaghnoun, in his capacity as WCO Vice Chair for the MENA region.

ROCB MENA was established in 2007 in Dubai and had a good start. The opening of a new office in Abu Dhabi is aimed at enhancing its delivery and coordination of capacity building assistance for the entire region. The presence of the region’s Vice Chair at the opening underlined the importance and expectations of this regional initiative.

The MOU to define the role of the ROCB was signed by Undersecretary Al Suwaidi, Acting Director General Khalid Al Bustani of the UAE Federal Customs and Secretary General Mikuriya on 21 January.

The ROCB organized a preparation session to discuss ways to effectively implement the revised Kyoto Convention, SAFE Standards and other WCO programmes in the region on 20 January. The session was attended by representatives of other UAE Customs administrations.
