WCO and OASIS sign an MOU to promote technology standards
Brussels, 17 May 2010
Report
WCO Secretary General, Kunio Mikuriya, and Peter Brown, Director of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations on 17 May 2010 at WCO headquarters.
The MOU will promote the dissemination of key trends in the adoption of technology standards in governments and the public sector worldwide.
Both the WCO and OASIS will help identify and address the needs of Customs administrations in emerging areas relating to information technology. This will help administrations that are undertaking computerization projects in adopting open IT that are being developed by OASIS and other standards bodies.
Through this MOU, the two organizations hope to encourage representatives of the information technology industry to adopt common data standards, such as the WCO Data Model, which will contribute to a more secure supply chain as well as faciliate trade.
The signing of this MOU is part of the WCO’s effort to strengthen Customs-Business Partnerships, which is the 2010 theme of the WCO and its Members and one of the 10 key building blocks listed in the WCO’s Customs in the 21st Century strategic policy.
