Customs Directors General from the WCO MENA region meet in Saudi Arabia

The WCO's North of Africa, Near and Middle East (MENA) region held its regional meeting of Directors General of Customs in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 9 October 2010 with the participation of WCO Secretary General, Kunio Mikuriya.

The meeting was held at the invitation of Director General Al-Khaliwi of Saudi Customs, back-to-back with the Second Arab Forum to Protect Consumers from Commercial Fraud, Counterfeiting and IPR Infringements, being held from 10 to 12 October 2010. Director General Chorfi of Moroccan Customs chaired the meeting in his capacity as Vice Chair for the MENA region.

Participants focused on capacity building in the region, emphasizing the importance of enhanced coordination between the the Vice-Chair, the Regional Office for Capacity Building and the Regional Training Centres. The meeting adopted their Regional Training Plan for 2011-2012. The Plan is based on the WCO Customs in the 21st Century vision and comprises six key components: model Customs, security and facilitation, Globally Networked Customs, coordinated border management, risk management, and integrity.

Directors General shared their experience in implementing these initiatives, as well as their capacity building work.

Kuwait and Yemen reported that their Revised Kyoto Convention (RKC) ratification process was at at an advanced stage. The Secretary General welcomed the progress being made in the region and renewed his commitment to provide support and assistance, where required.

During his stay in Riyadh Secretary General Mikuriya also visited the Saudi Customs Training Institute which had been approved as a WCO Regional Training Centre for the MENA region. The Head of the Institute provided information on the training facilities available and the types of training being provided at national, regional and international level.
