WCO takes part in World Economic Forum 16th PACI Task Force Meeting

Geneva, Switzerland – November 16/17, 2011

The WEF Partnership Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) met in Geneva on November 16-17 to discuss a full agenda on issues related to the fight against corruption in the international trade context. The PACI was founded by the WEF in collaboration with the private sector and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO's) to identify ways to address corruption. Recently, the PACI has recognized the importance of working with the public sector, and in particular with Customs administrations, as a way to promote integrity in the context of trade. In this respect, it has launched cooperation initiatives in Vietnam and Mongolia.

The WCO was invited to take part in the 16th meeting to present its Capacity Building strategy and programme. Mr. Daniel Perrier, WCO Secretariat, lead a discussion with the taskforce on the value of a well structured capacity building approach to achieve sustainable development. He highlighted the need to secure ownership among beneficiaries and political will to support Customs reform and modernization.

Mr. Perrier also provided information on the WCO Integrity Development strategy based on the WCO Revised Arusha Declaration. This important WCO instrument outlines 10 key organizational development aspects that must be addressed to strengthen integrity in the Customs context. Integrity represents an essential basis for all Customs development.

The WCO will continue to cooperate with PACI as it remains committed to assisting its Members in their efforts to reform and modernize, through its capacity building programmes.
