Customs modernization provides the basis for efficient enforcement in Senegal

WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya visited Dakar on 13 February 2012 at the invitation of Director General Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé of Senegal Customs to review progress in Customs modernization and to release the results of Operation Cocair 3 at a press conference.

During a meeting with the Director General and his senior management team, the Secretary General appreciated the briefings on Senegal’s implementation of an AEO programme and performance contracts, as well as the launch of their fully integrated information and clearance system – known by the acronym GAINDE.

At a later meeting with the Minister for the Economy and Finances, Abdoulaye Diop, which included Director General Cissé as well as the Deputy Director General of Nigerian Customs representing the WCO Vice Chair for West and Central Africa, discussions were held on Customs modernization, Operation Cocair and other regional issues.

Minister Diop thanked the Secretary General for the assistance the WCO was providing to the region, including its efforts to ensure more connectivity, and expressed his full support for Cocair and for Customs modernization which is the basis for efficient enforcement activities.

At the press conference to announce the results of Operation Cocair 3 that is aimed at combating the trafficking of drugs through airports in West Africa, the Secretary General was joined by senior officials from INTERPOL, the UNODC and the EU, the WCO’s official Cocair partners.
