As part of its commitment to the WCO Capacity Building Programme, the Finnish National Board of Customs invited two WCO facilitators to conduct a WCO Capacity Building awareness workshop in Helsinki, Finland.

The workshop took place over 5-8 June 2012 with over 30 officers taking part. The group represented a broad-range of Customs experience with an interest in becoming future WCO technical and operational advisors. Discussions covered what it is like when providing support to Customs administrations in other regions of the World, including the challenges and sustainable approaches to offering advice to ongoing Customs reform and modernization processes. Throughout interactive presentations and lively discussions the participants learnt about the WCO Capacity Building approach and context, as well as receiving a topical update of WCO standards, tools and capacity building activities.

The workshop was held against the background of the financial contribution of the Finnish Government to the WCO ESA project `Building Trade Capacity through Customs Modernization in the East and Southern Africa Region`. This project looks into 5 different development components and it is expected that this project may also benefit from Capacity Building support from the Finnish National Board of Customs.
