The 2nd Steering Committee (SC) meeting of the WCO Project “Building Trade Capacity through Customs Modernization in the East and Southern Africa Region“ took place in Helsinki on 24 to 26 April 2012. The meeting formed part of the governance structure of the project that is financed by the Finnish Government. Members of the SC are Mauritius, Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Finland and the WCO Secretariat.
The SC reviewed the progress of activities and budget development of the Project since its launch in October 2011 and provided further guidance on the activities of the coming months in the 5 Project Components: Leadership and Management Development (LMD), Enforcement support (development and regional implementation of nCEN), Co-ordinated Border Management, support to the ROCB and country-specific support to Namibia.
The meeting was successfully chaired by Mr. Tapani Erling, DG of Finnish Customs. As side events to the SC meeting, Finnish Customs provided participants with the possibility to get to know Finnish Customs work in some areas of the Project - participants visited the Vaalimaa Customs House at the Finnish-Russian border and the Finnish Risk Analysis Center (CBM and Enforcement component) as well as the Finnish Customs School (HR, LMD component).
