WCO Leadership and Management Development (LMD) Workshop in Abuja (Gwagwalada), Nigeria

As a follow up to the Top Executive Retreat earlier August, the WCO Leadership and Management Development workshop was held from the 29th August to the 9th September 2016 for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). It was attended by 21 senior managers comprising of both Area Controllers and Deputy Comptrollers from various departments.

The main objective of the workshop was to strengthen senior management capacity to lead and drive the NCS Reform and Modernisation agenda.

The workshop was attended by a very diverse but strong group of participants whose enthusiasm and eagerness to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to lead and manage more effectively, was displayed from day 1.

A wide range of topics such as visioning, strategic management, negotiations, people management, change management and strategic and personal communication were discussed in great detail.

During the workshop participants developed both leadership and management skills, to address the challenges faced by NCS in the near and farther away future.

Additionally, the responsibilities of the individual senior managers to drive modernization and change within their respective units as well as from an organisational perspective were discussed in depth.

The participants thoroughly enjoyed the topics covered over the two weeks as well as the methodology used to facilitate the sessions and found them to be very practical.

Feedback received also showed that they really enjoyed sessions on self-awareness, people management and change management. Overall the group was extremely participative and devoted to not only enhance their knowledge and skills, but to also implement them in their own behaviour, teams and organization as a whole.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali Rtd, indicated his support for the LMD workshop by also highlighting its importance and contribution to developing the necessary skills to embrace current and future challenges.
