On 15 June 2017, Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya addressed the ASEAN Brussels Committee (ABC), which comprises the Brussels-based Ambassadors and senior officials of the ten Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The Committee is currently chaired by the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Mr. Abu Sufian Haji Ali.
After providing a general overview of the WCO, its structure and activities, Secretary General Mikuriya highlighted the current priorities of the Organization, including trade facilitation, security, e-commerce, and revenue collection. He referred, in particular to the recently launched Security Initiative for Southeast Asia which focuses on border-security-related challenges in that region. Regional integration was also a topic of discussion, with particular reference to the ASEAN experience and challenges.
At the end of the meeting, the Ambassadors expressed their gratitude to the Secretary General for having invited them to WCO Headquarters and for the opportunity to learn more about the WCO and its work. They hoped that similar meetings could also be arranged in the future.
