Indonesian Minister of Finance visits WCO Headquarters

12 июля 2019

On 11 July 2019, Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati visited WCO Headquarters, accompanied by Indonesian Ambassador in Brussels, Mr. Yuri Thamrin, and Director General of Customs and Excise, Mr. Heru Pambudi.

WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya told Minister Sri Mulyani how much he appreciated her visit and the opportunity to discuss Customs modernization and related challenges with her.  He explained that Indonesian Customs’ reform journey ought to be shared with the international Customs community, highlighting in particular the emphasis placed on enhancing integrity and improving the working conditions of Customs officers, which had led to a positive transformation of the Administration.  The Secretary General also mentioned that Indonesian Customs had embarked on important modernization projects aimed at enhancing trade facilitation and border security and expressed his appreciation for the Administration’s ongoing support and engagement in the work of the WCO.

Minister Sri Mulyani welcomed the Secretary General’s leadership in driving the agenda of the international Customs community.  While recognizing the need to continue enhancing trade facilitation measures, she underscored the challenges associated with border enforcement, especially with regard to drug trafficking, money laundering and bulk cash smuggling.  She emphasized the need for enhanced information exchange leading to more effective enforcement, including in the passenger control arena.  Other areas of concern raised included environmental crime, and notably illegal trade in timber and waste trafficking.  These areas required enhanced coordinated border management and joint operational activities.

Secretary General Mikuriya stressed that political support was essential to ensure that Customs had the necessary resources to effectively fulfil its ambitious mandate.  In response to this, Minister Sri Mulyani acknowledged the increasingly important role played by Customs as the first line of defence and vowed to raise the profile of WCO activities in several important international fora, including the G20.

The Minister concluded her visit with a few words about the next WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition to be held in Bali from 3 to 5 June 2020.  She hoped that all WCO Members would join in this event, offering an opportunity to enjoy Indonesian hospitality and explore the latest technologies available for moving forward with Customs modernization.
