At the invitation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the World Customs Organization (WCO) participated in the “First resumed Eleventh session of the Implementation Review Group and Eleventh session of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group on the Prevention of Corruption”, taking place 31 August to 2 September 2020 and the first Intersessional meeting of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption on the preparations for the special session of the General Assembly Against Corruption (UNGASS), scheduled from 2 September to 4 September 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the meetings were held in hybrid format.
The first resumed eleventh session of the Implementation Review Group and the eleventh session of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group on the Prevention of Corruption were held jointly. The meetings were chaired by Dr. Harib Saeed Al Amimi, the President of Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of the United Arab Emirates. The event brought together representatives from the State Parties to the Convention and Intergovernmental Organizations. The main topics discussed were preventive measures, criminalization and law enforcement, exchange of information, practices and experiences gained in the implementation of the Convention, technical assistance and the prevention of corruption.
In its resolution 74/276 entitled “Special session of the General Assembly against Corruption”, the Assembly reiterated the importance of an inclusive preparatory process for the special session, including extensive substantive consultations. The first Intersessional meeting included a panel presentations given by State Parties from all regional groups on challenges and approaches to the prevention of corruption in times of crisis and on ending impunity by effectively combating corruption.
The WCO informed the Member States to the UN Convention Against Corruption on preventive measures and efforts of the international Customs community relating to combating corruption and promotion of Integrity in Customs.
