From 8 to 9 December 2022, within the framework of the SECO-WCO Global Trade Facilitation Programme (GTFP), the WCO successfully held a sub-regional workshop on Coordinated Border Management (CBM) at the WCO Headquarters in Brussels, with the participation of 22 Customs officials from the Customs Administrations of Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Türkiye and Ukraine.
The WCO Europe Sub-regional workshop on Coordinated Border Management enabled the Customs Administrations to benefit from learning the best practices of the EU members and from open discussions regarding underlying sub-themes of CBM, i.e., single window, use of technology, and integration of the system.
During two days, the participants had the opportunity to review the essential elements of coordinated border management and analyse the latest developments at the WCO. A panel discussion on the future of Coordinated Border Management also served to inspire a vision for how the next level of regional coordination and cooperation should look.
Furthermore, this workshop developed the capacities of the participants through an exchange of experiences, more specifically on good practices and challenges encountered in implementing CBM and through group exercises designed to identify specific recommendations for enhancing CBM within their respective Customs Administrations and regions through continued collaboration. It also served as a platform for the WCO Secretariat to collect feedback on the potential update of the CBM compendium.
