As part of its Capacity Building programme, the WCO organized a Leadership and Management Development (LMD) workshop from 20 to 31 March 2022 in Amman, Jordan for 20 senior managers of the Directorate General of Customs. The overall objective of the two-week interactive workshop was to strengthen senior management’s capacity to lead and drive reforms within Jordan Customs. The workshop was made possible with the support of the World Customs Organization’s (WCO) Customs Co-operation Fund (CCF).
Participants from various departments and Customs border posts were exposed to notions of ‘knowing yourself’ and ‘managing yourself first’, before leading and managing others. A wide range of topics on personal and organizational development was covered such as leadership, integrity, influencing, building trust, negotiations, people management, strategic and personal communication and change management. The workshop highlighted the importance of leadership and management skills, as well as the responsibilities of individual managers, to drive modernization and change within their work and personal life.
The participating managers showed a strong motivation and commitment to know, improve and manage themselves, in order to have a great and positive impact on others, as well as on the organization. With personal testimonies at the end of the workshop participants demonstrated their motivation to bridge the gap between policy making and organization-wide implementation of changes.
The closing ceremony of the workshop was attended by the Director General who stressed the importance of improving leadership and management skills for driving the Customs reforms and expressed the commitment of his administration to this type of events.
