The World Customs Organization (WCO) coordinated a Risk Management Study Visit by the Peruvian Customs Administration (SUNAT) to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) from 19 to 22 September 2023, under the SECO-WCO Global Trade Facilitation Programme (GTFP) framework. The visit aimed to strengthen the capacities of SUNAT regarding Risk Management practices on the land border of Canada, as well as inspection techniques, exchanging best practices and fostering cooperation.
The delegation consisted of eight Customs officials who had the opportunity to visit key locations, including the CBSA Headquarters and the National Targeting Centre (NTC) in Ottawa. These visits provided valuable insights into data-driven cargo and passenger risk profiling and targeting. Additionally, the delegation explored vehicle inspection procedures and cargo/passenger selectivity practices at the Lansdowne Port of Entry.
Throughout this four-day mission, the SUNAT’s officials gathered best practices that will be incorporated into the development of internal instruments to boost their risk management effectiveness, reducing discretional practices and systematically evaluating potential Customs offences.
The WCO and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) express their sincere gratitude to the CBSA for their steadfast support and collaboration, which played an instrumental role in ensuring the success of this knowledge-sharing endeavour.
