Building on the previous capacity-building workshops held in Uzbekistan, the second phase of the SECO-WCO Global Trade Facilitation Programme (GTFP) is progressing well in the country. The latest activity was a workshop on Risk Management and Data Analytics, which took place from 16 to 19 June in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The objective of the workshop was to build on capacities already developed within the Customs Committee (CC) on the topic and provide support for the development of an Integrated Risk Management Enhancement Plan.
The workshop brought together 15 Customs officials representing the Risk Management, Data Analytics, and Post Clearance Audit (PCA) units of the Customs Committee of Uzbekistan. It focused on reviewing the progress made in Customs risk management and data analytics following previous WCO technical support. The discussions also explored ways to support the development of a comprehensive Risk Management Enhancement Plan.
Customs officials further strengthened their skills in applying data analytics to risk management through hands-on exercises. The workshop also enhanced their understanding of potential data analytics and AI use cases, drawing on international examples from various countries. Through breakout sessions, participants identified key risks and prioritized mitigation actions. Finally, WCO experts provided recommendations and briefed department heads, who committed to incorporating these into the forthcoming update of the national Risk Management Enhancement Plan.
The WCO will continue to support the Customs Committee in the area of risk management and explore opportunities to provide further technical assistance to strengthen the risk management and data analytics capacities of the Customs Administration of Uzbekistan, including the relevant processes and the transition to compliance-based management.
